Another wonderful evening with our TAP Scholars and the TAP village of family and friends.Th is year’s Benefit Concert and silent auction was a great success. Thank you to all of our supporters. Our special guest this year was Rolanda Carter. The TAP band with singer Donald Walker was amazing as always. .We were excited to have them back this year. Of course, the TAP band along with Tyrone ending the concert with “Don’t Stop Believin’”. This year we awarded six scholarships; two high school seniors and four returning TAP Scholars totaling $4,750. To date we have award scholarships totaling over $36,500.00. We cannot say THANK YOU enough!!
Precious Oyewole - Labeled as an ‘overachiever’ and ‘perfectionist’ as a young child, Precious set high standards for herself. Precious graduated Reservoir High School with an associate degree through a dual partnership from Howard Community College. She was on both the Principal’s Honor Roll as well as the Dean’s list for multiple years throughout high school. Along with her friends, she started their schools first African Student Association, an organization for students of the African Diaspora. And in her sophomore year, started BBBB (Beauty and Brillance Beyond Barriers). This scholarship will assist her in building a future where she can meaningfully contribute to her community. Precious will be attending University of Maryland College Park, majoring in Finance and Information Systems.
Torrien James – Torrien’s dream was to get into a good college. This is what was instilled in him by his mom and college was the key to success. During his senior year at Baltimore Polytechnic Institute, he chose to pursue a career in the field of Biology. He chose this path because he believed a person’s health is their wealth. He also believes it’s important to know the biological makeup of viruses to be able to try to stop the spread. Torrien’s teachers described him as highly analytical, considerate and a young man with unspoken confidence. A man who has a piercing desire to learn. He was on the Honor Roll for multiple years throughout high school. Torrien would like to start a mentorship program for kids who grew up with similar circumstances as him. Torrien will be attending Morehouse College, majoring in Biology.
Imani Groce (Returning TAP Scholar – 2023, 2024 & 2025) – Imani is entering her junior year at Hampton University, majoring in Sports Management, Pre Law track. She is a member of the Sophomore Executive Council’s Political Education and Community Service Committee, where Imani has worked to educate students on their rights to vote, advocating for civic engagement and providing absentee ballot information. This role has reinforced her passion for advocacy and service. In Imani’s words, “My college experience has been one of resilience, leadership, and self-discovery. Through personal loss, academic challenges, and new responsibilities, I have learned invaluable lessons that will shape my future. As I continue my journey, I remain committed to making an impact, embracing discomfort, and striving for excellence in everything I do”.
Margot Axenson (Returning TAP Scholar – 2022, 2024 & 2025) – Margot will be a senior at Shenandoah University majoring in Sports Management. She has strong work ethics, perseverance and time management skills. Margot has made the Dean’s list multiple times while attending SU and is a member of the National Honor Society. Her college experience has taught her a life perspective where she has learned to enjoy life and all its experiences. Margot plans to extend her stay at SU for a 5th year to obtain her MBA. Her ultimate goal is to work in Sports Management for professional baseball.
Varia Alston (Returning TAP Scholar 2022, 2024 & 2025) – Varia will be entering her senior year at McDaniel College, majoring in Business Administration. Over the last three years, Varia has become more involved on campus and has taken on several leadership roles: Resident Assistant (RA), student ambassador and treasurer for the Anime club. She is active in several groups: Haue of Excellence, Black Student Union, Anime Club, Edge Experience and the National Society of Leadership and Success. In Varia words, “college has made me realize that you have to make time to have fun. Those four years fly by faster than you can blink. You don’t want to look back on memories and regret not doing things that made you happy. So, do what you need to do, but have fun while doing it”.
Amir Gordon (Returning TAP Scholar 2023 & 2025) – Amir is a junior at Notre Dame of Maryland majoring in Chemistry. Amir is an active member of the NDMU Student Government Association. This membership has taught Amir leadership, resourcefulness and problem-solving skills as well as providing an awareness of current social and political issues. His college experience has allowed him to have gratitude for what he has, and the achievements that he has made both academically and from his extracurriculars.

Background The TAP Foundation was created as a result of the dream of Tyrone A. Parker, II, a young man filled with passion for drumming, recording and producing music. His single mother struggled to provide him with the necessary materials, equipment and financial support needed to pursue his dream. Through many sacrifices, much prayer, Godly determination, and the support of family and friends, Tyrone persevered. This scholarship was established to support student(s) with the opportunity to achieve their educational goals.
Awards
TAP Foundation and Legacy Scholarships will be awarded in varying amounts.
Awardees may re-apply each year
Verification of enrollment is required prior to disbursement of funds
All scholarship awards will be sent directly to the institution
Dr. Leroy Barton Memorial Scholarship awards students attending historically black college or university (HBCU) and majoring in the performing arts.
Eligibility
Applicants must be from a single-parent household.
Current high school student or college student. between the ages of 17-22.
Cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 2.5 or better.
Verifiable recent or current Community Service (Last 12 months/current academic year).
Must be able to attend the TAP Foundation Benefit Concert.
Application Process
Must complete the attached application in its entirety.
Provide three current letters of recommendation (Must be from a teacher, school professional, community leader, employer or professional reference – (from the current year). Letters should be addressed to the TAP Foundation. Letters not addressed to the TAP Foundation will not be accepted.
Provide most recent high school or college official transcript.
Acceptance letter from an accredited two- or four- year college/university.
Provide high school or college resume.
Provide any awards, commendations, citations and achievements (max of ”5”).
Provide 1st page of tax forms from parent, guardian or custodian with social security numbers redacted (removed).
Incomplete, illegible or applications postmarked after the deadline will not be considered.
