Another wonderful evening with our TAP Scholars and the TAP village of family and friends. This year’s Benefit Concert and silent auction was a great success. Thank you to all of our supporters.
Our special guest this year was Gerard Carter. The TAP band with singer Tori Yion was amazing as always. We were excited to have them back this year. Of course, the TAP band along with Tyrone ending the concert with “Don’t Stop Believin’”.
This year we awarded seven scholarships: four high school seniors and three returning TAP Scholars totaling $6,250. This brings our total to date to $31,750 in scholarships. We cannot say THANK YOU enough!!

Here are our 2024 TAP Scholars:
1. Taylor Lynch – A 2024 graduate from Franklin High School in Reisterstown Maryland. She was an Honor Roll student at Franklin and was in several honors classes. Taylor was active on the school’s debate team, chorus and played volleyball. For 2 years now, she has been employed at the neighborhood Starbucks, working part-time after school and weekends to save money for college.
This fall, she is excited to be attending McDaniel College in Westminster Maryland as a freshman. Taylor’s goal is to pursue a major in Forensic Science. She wants to become a forensic investigator/scientist. Thank you for helping to make my dream become a reality.
2. Josephine Simmons – Will be attending Towson University to study Kinesiology and hopes to pursue an athletic training career after college. After 4 years of playing on the varsity girls’ soccer team at Carver Center, Josephine became friends with her school's athletic trainer. She became intrigued and inspired to follow that path so she could help athletes like herself return to playing to the best of their abilities. She plans on continuing to be involved with athletics at Towson as well as becoming involved with the school's chapter of Camp Kesem. Camp Kesem is an organization that hosts weeklong summer camps for children whose caregivers have been affected by cancer. Josephine has been attending the chapter through the University of Maryland since 2018 and hopes to give back what she has gained from the camp. This scholarship allows Josephine to attend college and pursue her academic and career goals with less worry about finances.
3. Kyla Barnes – Kyla is a graduate from Maya Angelou Public Charter School in Washington, DC. Receiving the financial aid scholarship feels incredibly meaningful to Kyla. This support not only alleviates the financial burden of pursuing higher education but also symbolizes a heartfelt investment in my future. As Kyla embarks on her journey towards a career in Psychology, she will be attending Washington & Jefferson College. With this support, Kyla is empowered to focus on her studies, gain valuable experiences and ultimately contribute meaningfully to the field she is passionate about.
4. Mykelle Barnes – A proud graduate of the class of 2024 from The Baltimore Polytechnic Institute. Throughout the challenges brought about by the Pandemic, including the transition to virtual learning and back to the classroom, she remained focused and determined in her academic pursuits, resulting in a 4.2 GPA and maintaining Honor Roll status. As a result, she has been accepted to Towson University, where she will pursue a Nursing major. Mykelle is actively involved in youth ministry and dance at Morning Star Baptist Church, and the support from the congregation has been invaluable. She is genuinely grateful for the scholarship awarded to her from the TAP Foundation, which will allow her to pursue her studies without financial constraints as she works towards a career in Pediatric Nursing. Mykelle’s long-term goal is to obtain a master’s degree as a Nurse Practitioner in Pediatrics.
5. Varia Alston (2-year TAP Scholar 2022 and 2024) – Varia is a rising junior at McDaniel College in Westminster, MD. Her major is Business Administration with a concentration in Entrepreneurship. She plans to own her own business one day focusing on mental health. She graduated from The Baltimore Polytechnic Institute in 2022 and was selected as a 2022 TAP Scholarship recipient. Varia graduated with perfect attendance from PreK3 -12th grade and so far, has not missed any of her college classes as well. She has embraced McDaniel College and all that it has to offer by being an involved student. She is a member of the Black Student Union, National Society of Leadership and Success, House of Style Fashion Club, Anime Club, Haus of Excellence: LGBTQIA+ Alliance, and a past sophomore EDGE Experience Mentor. She was crowned as the female Sophomore Majesty for the 2023 Homecoming Court and is looking forward to being a resident assistant for incoming freshmen this fall. Finally, since she is not that far away from home, Varia volunteers and mentors’ young ladies with the Junior Catholic Daughters of the Americas, Ct. #2257 (a former organization she was a member of) and sings on the Gospel Choir at her parish, St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church. Varia thanks the Parker family and the TAP Foundation for this scholarship as it means so much. It will help close the gap in her financial obligation for tuition and fees. She is honored to have been selected as a 2024 TAP Scholar.
6. Margaret Axenson (2-year TAP Scholar 2022 and 2024) – Margot graduated from Herndon High School in 2022 with high honors and an Advanced Studies Diploma. She is currently entering her junior year at Shenandoah University where she is majoring in Business with a Sports Management concentration. When she completes her undergraduate degree, she wants to stay a fifth year to get her MBA and then work for a professional sports team or a college. This scholarship means that she can focus on her studies rather than worry about the financial obligation after she is done with school.
7. Imani Groce (2-year TAP Scholar 2023 and 2024) – Imani is a rising sophomore at Hampton University majoring in Sports Management on a Pre-Law track. She is passionate about breaking her way into the sports agency field, representing athletes, and emphasizing equitable contracts for women in sports. Imani had an extremely tough freshman year of college with suffering the loss of her father; however, she is using her grief as a catalyst for personal growth and resilience. Upon graduation from college, she hopes to tackle law school and begin interning with various athletic organizations. Imani is a natural-born leader with a constant drive for self-improvement, mediocrity is not an option for her. With that being said, she is more than deserving of this scholarship and beyond grateful for the opportunities the TAP Foundation has given her.
